Description
From the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, organ music was wildly popular in America. Organ builders could hardly fill the huge demand for both concert hall and home organs. Organ players developed cult followings and bitter rivalries. One movement arose to restore to American organs the tonal clarity and precision that instruments of the baroque period had, while another took electronic organs to rock concert halls, where younger listeners could be found. In his critically acclaimed book, New York Times journalist and editor - and passionate amateur organist - Craig Whitney brings the colorful history of the American pipe organ to life. Each book also contains a bonus CD with Whitney's witty and wise introduction to the magnificent mechanics and majestic music of the pipe organ. The result is a joyful celebration of a remarkable instrument that will delight organ buffs, music fans, and general readers alike.

Summary: "ALL THE STOPS; THE GLORIOUS PIPE ORGAN, etc"
I have been wanting to read this book for some time but never got around to buying it. It really appeals to true organ lovers. It's not designed for the casual reader, but for a reader who wants to know a lot of intimate details about the organ industry. It's written in an intriguing manner, very revealing about organs, organ builders, organ owners (private plus institutional), perhaps a bit biased in someways but lots of fun reading. A must for organ afficionados!

Summary: "an important organ-listener's companion"
I will keep this book with me for awhile. It's pages will become dog-eared as I refer to various organs that I wish to hear. I am not an organist, nor even a musician, but a keen aficionado. Whitney introduces the key points..differences in architechtural acoustic environments and type of "action" in each organ, includes comments on the configuration and voicing of pipes and the difficulties organists might face due to the traffic, the weather, the state of repair...all that before even considering the interpretations and technique of the organist. All this, wrapped in cultural and political context. Yes, it was quite a good read, and I have it, thanks to my reference librarian friend who I introduced to organ music. I'd love to share it with so many others..but I'm keeping it.

Summary: "Entertaining organ information"
I'm not an organist, but love hearing a pipe organ or the recent, less expensive, digital virtual organ. I heard about "All the Stops" and got it from my local library via inter-library loan. After reading it, and having my organ knowledge gratly expanded, I returned the book and thought I was through with it. Since then, I've frequently wished I had my own copy, so I'm putting it on my Christmas want list. Professional organists, organ builders, organ voicers etc. might find it too simple, but for us amature organ music lovers, it's GOOOOOOD!

Summary: "Loved This Book"
Even though I don't play the organ and don't read music or know much about the instrument--I loved this book just because I have always loved organ music. I found it a very enjoyable book to read. It brought me closer to the world of organ by reading about the makers and artists and showing me the progression of organ popularity over the centuries. LONG LIVE THE PIPE ORGAN (and all organs--too much disuse of them these days).
